(New Philadelphia, Ohio) — The Empower Tusc Coalition is encouraging the community to join communities across the country in celebrating the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) National Prevention Week (NPW May 8th – May 14th.

The awareness campaign is designed to increase public awareness of, and action around, mental and substance use disorders.

Each year, SAMHSA’s NPW promotes prevention year-round by providing ideas, building capacity, and sharing tools and resources to help individuals and communities make substance use prevention happen every day.

To encourage healthy decision-making, strengthen community, build resilience, and create hope, Empower Tusc operates daily in partnership with local residents, businesses, and organizations to make a positive impact in Tuscarawas County. The coalition remains dedicated to meeting community members where they are by attending countless events each year, speaking in schools and businesses, and ensuring 24-hour access through online resources and support numbers.

“At Empower Tusc we remain devoted to ensuring promoting healthy choices for everyone in Tuscarawas County,” explained Coalition Coordinator, Jodi Salvo. “SAMHSA’s NPW is an opportunity for us to make our voice even louder as we join communities across the country to celebrate the positive impact that we can have on substance misuse prevention.”

SAMHSA’s NPW echoes a key message of the 2016 Surgeon General’s Report on Alcohol, Drugs, and Health: We can shift the way society thinks about substance misuse and substance use disorders while identifying actions that individuals and communities can take to prevent and treat these conditions.
